Work Is the Devil You Know (And Rest Feels Risky)

negative feelings negative thoughts productivity Mar 07, 2026

If you’re a woman physician, chances are you don’t struggle with laziness.

You struggle with stopping.

When free time appears unexpectedly, many of us don’t feel relief.

We feel pressure.

Pressure to catch up.
To get ahead.
To be productive.

This isn’t about poor boundaries or bad time management.

It’s about conditioning.

From medical training onward, we learned:

  • We can handle anything.
  • We are responsible.
  • We are capable.
  • We don’t drop balls.

Somewhere along the way, that turned into:
“I should be able to do it all.”

That belief has consequences.

The Three Patterns Keeping You Stuck

  1. The “I Should Do It All” Script
If your to-do list is longer than what any human could realistically accomplish, the issue isn’t efficiency. It’s expectation.
  2. The Achievement Dopamine Loop
High-achievers get rewarded for productivity. When you stop producing, it can feel unsettling—even wrong.
  3. The “No Rest Until…” Rule
If you require completion before permission to rest, and the work never ends, then rest never comes.

This is how burnout becomes chronic.

Not just because medicine is demanding.

But because we are internally demanding.

The Way Forward

You don’t fix this by becoming less ambitious.

You fix it by becoming more intentional.

You question the rules you’re living by.

You examine whose voice is telling you that rest must be earned.

You practice tolerating the discomfort of not being productive for a few minutes at a time.

It’s a skill.

And it’s learnable.

You became a physician to care deeply.

You are allowed to care deeply about yourself too.

Rest is not the enemy.

It’s just unfamiliar.

And unfamiliar is where growth begins.
