The Back to School Refresh That Isn't About Buying a New Planner

easy button system Aug 27, 2026

There's a very specific kind of physician who gets a little giddy in the school supply aisle every August. New pens. New folders. That Trapper Keeper energy, if you're old enough to remember what that was. It's not really about the supplies. It's about the reset.

I want to borrow that feeling this week, but not for the reason you'd expect.

Most of us, when we feel that pull toward a fresh start, default to the same move. Build something new. Buy the beautiful planner. Design the perfect system. And then, a few weeks later, the planner sits untouched and we feel like we failed at organization again.

That's not the move. The work we do as physicians is inherently complex. Diagnoses are messy. People are messy. No system fixes that, and it was never supposed to. But there is a category of stuff that isn't complex, it's just been sitting there broken for a while because we never circled back.

Start with documentation. Not building a whole new template system, just looking at what you already have. The dot phrases you wrote a year ago that you now have to correct every time. The referral note that's way longer than it needs to be. I recently sat down with Claude and had it help me rework my own referral process, and it landed on a fix I hadn't considered: a separate, short document generated straight from the visit, ready to copy into the referral, instead of a long letter I had to build by hand every time. I wasn't trying to become a super user of anything. I was just trying to stop doing the same annoying task twice.

Then there's home. For a lot of us it's lunch. We came out of a chaotic summer, the routine fell apart, and now we're either not eating or eating garbage between patients. This isn't the week to become a meal prep influencer. It might just be the week to admit that frozen meals from Trader Joe's, eaten on a schedule, beat skipping lunch entirely.

And then there's the harder one: what are you still doing yourself that someone else in your house could be doing? For a lot of physician parents, especially moms, this one is tangled up in guilt. We already feel like we're not around enough, so we don't want to also ask our kids to do more. But under-asking them doesn't protect them. It keeps them dependent, and it keeps everything on your plate.

None of this requires a new system. It requires one question, asked honestly, about the stuff that's already been bothering you: how can I make this easier?

That's the whole refresh. Not new pens. Just less friction.
