Reimagining The 3rd Place

boundaries negative feelings self-care Jul 31, 2026

Where do you go, or what do you do, that is not home and not work, where you get to just be a person?

If nothing comes to mind, I want you to sit with that for a second instead of rushing past it. It is more common than you think, and it is worth paying attention to.

There is a concept sociologists call a third place. It started out describing a physical location, the neighborhood coffee shop, the local bar, the kind of spot where you could show up and be known without needing a reason. Picture the coffee shop from Friends, downstairs from everyone's apartments, not home and not work, just a place people gathered. A real third place tends to share a few things in common. It is neutral ground, meaning nobody feels obligated to be there. It levels the playing field, so your job title or income does not matter once you walk in. It centers around conversation and connection. It is welcoming and easy to access. And it has its regulars, the people who give the place its rhythm and personality.

Here is where it gets useful for physicians specifically. A third place does not have to be a physical location. It can be an activity, a hobby, something that meets those same criteria of being neutral, welcoming, connection oriented, and open to you as you are, not as your credentials.

And this matters more than it might seem to on the surface. So many of us built our entire adult identity around being a physician. We went in young, we trained hard, and somewhere along the way the rest of us got quieter. But your brain needs space that is not fully occupied by medicine. Your nervous system needs time that is not spent caregiving, whether that caregiving is happening at work or at home. And you need relationships and moments of curiosity with people who are not your patients and not your family, people who do not know or care what your job is.

So what could this look like for you? It might be running, not because a mentor once told you to take up a hobby, but because you actually love it. It could be gardening, even if it is just a few plants you talk to on the porch. It could be artisanal cooking or baking, the kind you do because you want to, not because you are just trying to keep everyone fed. It could be a craft, a rec sports league, hiking, kayaking, a standing coffee shop ritual with a book, or a book club that has nothing to do with your work.

And here’s few things that often masquerade as hobbies but usually are not doing the job. Chasing credit card points can be fun to optimize, but it rarely leaves you feeling rested or connected. Shopping, especially the kind done to numb out or fill a feeling, tends to leave you wanting more instead of satisfied. And scrolling, well, you already know. It keeps us occupied without actually connecting us to anyone in real life.

If you are in a season with a new baby, a demanding rotation, or a family member who needs you around the clock, I am not telling you to add one more obligation to your plate. I am telling you that even a small, imperfect version of this matters. A twenty minute walk. One coffee shop afternoon a month. A single class.

When you have a place where you are not Dr. Anyone, where you get to be curious, a little bad at something, fully human, you show up better everywhere else too. At work. At home. In your own skin.

If this is something you have been missing and you are ready to actually make room for it instead of just thinking about it, I would love to help you figure out what that looks like. You can schedule a free discovery call here: https://calendly.com/healthierforgood/coaching-discovery-call
