The ONE Skill You Need to Practice for a Better 2026
Jan 23, 2026
January is a rough month for people-pleasing perfectionists.
The year begins with ambition and intention, but it doesn’t take long before reality intervenes—late clinics, staffing shortages, endless inboxes. And somehow, we internalize all of it as personal failure.
But here’s the truth: you’re not missing discipline or motivation.
You’re missing a skill.
In the latest episode of Ending Physician Overwhelm, I talk about the one skill that quietly transforms how we experience our work, our lives, and ourselves—especially in medicine.
That skill is practicing delight.
For many physicians, delight feels suspicious. Selfish. Like it must come at someone else’s expense. We’re so used to sacrificing ourselves to meet everyone else’s needs that caring for ourselves feels like disappointing others.
In the episode, I break this down using a simple framework that shows why so many of us get stuck delighting others while chronically disappointing ourselves—and how learning to tolerate discomfort is the bridge to a better way.
Delight doesn’t mean indulgence or checking out.
It means noticing and savoring what actually fills your cup:
- A warm sip of coffee
- A real laugh
- Fresh air
- Gratitude received and allowed to land
- A moment of presence with someone (or something) you love
When we practice delight on purpose, something surprising happens:
We become more effective.
More generous.
More grounded.
And better able to care for others without losing ourselves.
